Riviera Maya
Xel-Ha
Xel-Há is a stunning natural water park where freshwater meets the sea in a lagoon teeming with colorful tropical fish, making it one of the best spots in the Riviera Maya for snorkeling. The name Xel-Há means “where the water is born” in Maya, and the whole experience feels like stepping into a jungle oasis. It’s an all-inclusive park, so once you’re in, food, drinks, gear, and activities are covered—just show up early to take full advantage.

Isla Mujeres - whale sharks!
From June to September, Isla Mujeres becomes one of the world’s premier destinations to swim alongside gentle whale sharks—the largest fish in the ocean. Tours typically depart in the early morning and include snorkeling gear and lunch on the boat, but it’s important to choose an operator that follows ethical practices, including limiting group sizes and maintaining respectful distances from the animals. If you’re prone to seasickness, be prepared—the journey out to the whale sharks can be choppy but is absolutely worth it for the once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Tulum
Tulum blends history, beach, and boho charm like no other. The ancient Mayan ruins perched on a seaside cliff are among the most iconic archaeological sites in Mexico—and an early morning visit will help you beat the crowds and the tropical heat. After exploring the ruins, take a short trip to one of the nearby cenotes like Gran Cenote or Cenote Calavera for a refreshing swim. The town of Tulum itself is full of quirky cafes, art, and excellent food options ranging from upscale vegan cuisine to fresh ceviche stands.

Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen’s downtown area is a vibrant mix of laid-back beach life and energetic nightlife, centered around the pedestrian-friendly Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue). Here you’ll find everything from artisan markets and tequila tastings to international cuisine and lively bars, all just a few blocks from the beach. For a more local vibe and better prices, venture beyond the tourist zone to 30th Avenue and the surrounding streets, where you’ll find authentic taco joints and cozy cafés. Cash is king here, especially at smaller vendors and taxi stands, so it’s smart to carry pesos.
Akumal - scuba diving!
Akumal, which means “place of the turtles” in Maya, is a peaceful bay nestled between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, famous for its calm waters and sea turtle encounters. Akumal offers a tranquil, wildlife-rich alternative to the more touristy beaches nearby.
