RN Volunteer in Mexicali, Mexico
Volunteering just a few hours across the border from my home in Southern California marked a profoundly impactful start to my journey in global health, allowing me to connect with and serve underserved communities.
Resources I have at the tip of my fingers is hard to come by for a lot of these local communities and with the help of my volunteer medical team, we were able to provide some of the foundation for these communities to begin their own health journeys.
Some of the check ups included blood pressure management, blood sugar and diabetes control and education to schedule appointments with the local clinics for a more thorough workup. We provided day care assistance and education on importance of sunscreen usage and drinking enough water as Mexicali can be a very hot and dry place.
In-home visits were conducted to identify early signs of health issues, provide education on maintaining proper nutrition, and ensure that patients are following prescribed treatments. For individuals with chronic conditions like hypertension or diabetes, our guidance can make a significant difference in managing their symptoms and preventing complications. By helping patients schedule health visits and navigate the often-complicated process of accessing healthcare services, we ensure they receive continued support. This can involve coordinating transportation, explaining clinic schedules, and offering assistance with paperwork or language barriers.
Volunteering in Mexicali offers the rewarding experience of making a real difference in a community, all while contributing to the improvement of public health and access to essential healthcare. If my team and I were able to make a difference in at least one life, I call that a success!
