What an adventure Colombia gave us! If anyone has ever seen the classic 80’s romcom “Romancing the Stone” which takes place in Colombia, then you know what I mean.

Jungles, wildlife, crazy roads, dancing, music everywhere!

City Charm

After leaving the airport, we took a white taxi with blue lines for safety. Although Medellin is safe for travelers and explorers alike, it is important to stay aware and stick to authorized vehicles to travel in. Pick pocketers are common but I never experienced feeling unsafe or threatened while spending time in the heart of Medellin (once one of the most dangerous cities on the planet)!

After a few attempts, we learned how to navigate the metro system! At the top of Cerro Nutibara, Pueblito Paisa is a lovely replica of an Antioquian village, showcasing the area's history and culture. With its cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and stunning views of Medellín, it’s perfect for a relaxing walk, local souvenirs, and beautiful photos. You can also enjoy ice cream while watching people dance and exploring the shops.

I strongly suggest taking a private history tour about Pablo Escobar, the notorious drug lord who greatly influenced Medellín, for better or worse. His violent rule shaped the city's past, but today Medellín is focused on change. The tour highlighted the city's resilience and ongoing efforts for improvement. It was captivating to hear from a local guide who experienced it all!

Our guide took us to Comuna 13, a lively neighborhood famous for its art and transformation. Once one of the most dangerous areas in Medellín, it has become a symbol of hope and community. Buildings are decorated with colorful murals, and street dancers perform everywhere. There are even escalators to help you move around! Guided tours explore the area's history, local projects, and amazing graffiti, showing how art drives social change..

Plaza Botero is an open-air museum located in the heart of Medellín, showcasing 23 oversized sculptures by the renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero. The plaza is a hub of art and culture, where locals and visitors gather to admire the playful and unique works, creating a lively atmosphere.

Situated in downtown Medellín, Parque Berrío is a historic public square surrounded by colonial-era buildings, offering a glimpse into the city’s past. It’s a bustling area where locals and visitors interact, with nearby shops, cafes, and churches, making it a great starting point for exploring the city’s cultural heart.
