Places to explore in…
Galway
The River Corrib flows through the city of Galway. Be sure to explore Quay Street, one of the most iconic streets in Galway, located in the heart of the Latin Quarter, a historic area that traces its roots back to the medieval period.
The Latin Quarter gets its name from the Latin-speaking merchant class that settled in the area during the 16th century, contributing to its vibrant trading and cultural life. Today, Quay Street and the Latin Quarter are bustling with narrow cobblestone lanes, colorful pubs, restaurants, shops, and street performers, capturing the lively, traditional atmosphere of Galway.
Eyre square has a long history, having served as a market space and gathering area for centuries.
Galway's lively music scene is rooted in trad music, the rich heritage of Irish folk music. With its unique melodies and rhythms, trad music is vital to Ireland's musical identity, thriving in pubs, festivals, and cultural events nationwide. (For my list of pubs see my “Galway Eats” tab).
I recommend taking the “Galway Dark History Tour” which offers a chilling yet captivating glimpse into the darker, lesser-known stories that have shaped Galway's rich history.
Kylemore Abbey, located in County Galway, is a stunning Gothic-style mansion set against the backdrop of the Mourne Mountains and nestled on the shores of Lough Pollacappul. Originally built in the 19th century as a private residence, it became an abbey in the early 20th century when it was taken over by Benedictine nuns.
